An underlay is a layer of material that is placed beneath a carpet during installation. It serves several important functions in enhancing the performance, comfort, and longevity of carpets. Most carpets are fitted with underlay although it is possible to install a carpet without it, by sticking the carpet using a non-permanent glue directly to the subfloor.

The results are not as good, and you may notice irregularities with the subfloor which are more likely to show through. If you would like the carpet fitted without underlay, you will need to choose a carpet with a ‘felt’ or ‘fleece’ backing.

Gripper Rods, also known as carpet strips, are narrow strips of wood with small, sharp nails or tacks protruding upward. These strips are typically installed along the edges of a room, near the perimeter of walls, and they serve as a crucial component in the carpet installation process. Replacing your Gripper Rods is always recommended to provide a firm grip and ensure your carpet is kept taut. However, if your Gripper Rods are in a particularly good condition, or less than 12 months old it is possible to re-use them. You may also install a ‘felt’ or ‘fleece’ backed carpet using adhesive, not Gripper Rods, but it is not recommended for several reasons – less comfort, your carpet will wear more quickly and subfloor irregularities are more likely to show through.

We offer a good quality 8mm Underlay by British manufacturer ‘Ball and Young’ which is suitable for all areas of the home. We sincerely believe this product is the ‘best-in-class’ and will meet the expectations of even the most discerning customer.

This question is usually only applicable to sheet vinyl as carpets hardly ever require subfloor preparation, especially if fitted with underlay which will help conceal minor imperfections.

For VINYL, it is vital the surface it is laid on is completely smooth. In most cases where vinyl was fitted previously, the subfloors will have been plyboarded or smoothed with a screed / smoothing compound. You will NOT therefore need to call us. If you are in doubt, it is better we visit to take a look. It is also possible we can do minor repair work which is why we don’t offer the option online to prevent customers paying more than they need to.

Please see our ‘How to measure’ videos by clicking the ‘Measuring’ tab at the top of the homepage. There are different videos according the area you wish to carpet, including advice for measuring vinyl flooring.

We would recommend buying a dense twist pile carpet, such as the ‘Oxford’, ‘Churchill’, ‘Buckingham’ or ‘Kensington’ ranges. Polypropylene carpets are arguably better for cleaning so our favourite is ‘Oxford’ which balances durability with cost.

Unfortunately we do not offer a sample service. However, if you book an appointment for us to visit, please let us know which ranges you want to see and we’ll make sure the estimator has sample on hand to show you.

All of our carpets come with at least 5 year wear warranties. However, the longevity of a carpet will depend on a number of factors, such as how much footfall the carpet will take, how regularly it is hoovered etc. Twist or loop pile carpets tend to maintain their appearance for a longer period compared to Saxony carpets, which have a deeper pile and are more susceptible to crushing.

We offer the complete service, including installation where we match you with a top-rate fitter. Although the fitter is not employed directly by Carpets 4 Landlords, they are highly trained and understand our company standards.

We recommend low pile, stain resistant carpet ranges made from polypropylene, which are much easier to clean. Twist pile carpets are generally better for pets than loop pile, as claws can get caught in the loops. Ranges such as ‘Oxford’ would be our top choice, but regardless of the carpet chosen, regular vacuuming and prompt cleaning of pet accidents are essential to maintain the carpets appearance and prolong its lifespan.

Yes, all of our carpets come with warranties with the duration varying with the range. Please refer to the product detail page or contact customer service for specific warranty information.

Our calculator asks for the net sizes and adds a fitters margin to the calculation. This margin is slightly higher for Hall, Stairs and Landing due to the fact these areas often use more carpet than expected, especially if staircases contain steps that turn. Our unique system has been rigorously tested so our quotes can be as competitive as possible, while offering the convenience of an online quotation.
